Frederick Sommer held no formula for working on an image. Collages could be made from one piece, a few interlocking or separated pieces, or hundreds of pieces piled on top of each other. "Art," he explained to Studs Terkel in 1963, "really has it's basis? it is a hunt, a living search for dealing with imperfection."
