In 1963, Studs Terkel, on WFMT Radio, interviewed Frederick Sommer while an exhibition of Sommer's work was on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. During this interview when Sommer was asked about "touches of horror" in his imagery, he answered, "what is horrible about something that is dead? I cannot think of life and I cannot think of death. I can only think of life and death if I am going to be precise about it, then I don't really know what either one is, and so for the time being I am not discriminating against death."
