Frederick Sommer made cut paper drawings from 1962-85. He used heavy brown butcher paper from a four-foot roll and began by cutting off a seven-foot long piece. He would lay the paper over a 4 x 5-foot piece of Masonite and start cutting/drawing into the sheet with a utility blade. As the paper was cut it would begin to buckle and curl. Always paying attention to the corners and edges, Sommer explored the possibilities with his first cut informing his next moves. Because of the inexpensive nature of the brown paper, cut papers that did not hang together or intrigue Sommer visually, were easily discarded. |
